Tights:

Tights are leg coverings that go all the way from the waist to the feet, worn as tightly as possible to the body. Originally, tights were worn mostly by men because they were created in a time when people rode horseback and having their tights right against their legs meant the clothing wouldn’t get in the way. In modern times, tights are worn primarily by women and girls, and also toddlers and infants of either sex. Generally, the difference between pantyhose and tights is simply the thickness of the yarn used to knit the item. Anything smaller than 40-denier is pantyhose and anything larger is known to be tights.

Tights can come in many varieties, including control top tights, seamless tights, support tights and more. But the construction of tights is usually nylon, cotton or Lycra. When tights are made without feet, they are usually referred to as leggings rather than tights. And tights made for athletic purposes often have a stirrup that holds the cuff near the ankle. Many sports require tights, as well. There are gymnastics tights, cycling tights, skating tights and running tights. The reason athletes use tights rather than pants is because tights have no additional material to get in the way of the legs as they move. Some men in history have been accused of padding their tights to look like they have more developed legs.

Tights are also very common in theater and dance, where both men and women need to be able to move without hindrance. Tights specifically used for horseback riding are called jodhpurs or riding tights. Some basketball players, including Kobe Bryant of the NBA, have also been known to wear tights under their uniforms.
