Hanes underwear has a rich, long history. In 1901, J. Wesley Hanes began making men’s hosiery and founded the company Shamrock Mills. In 1902, Pleasant Hanes introduced two-piece men’s underwear and formed the P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. In 1910, Shamrock Mills took on the name Hanes Hosiery Mill and began to make women’s hosiery. In 1920, Hanes Knitting expanded to manufacture undershirts, brief, knitted shorts and sleepwear. It wasn’t until 1965 that the two companies merges under the header of the Hanes Corporation. In 1975, they launched the soon-to-be-famous Beefy-T. In 1992, they started their memorable “Wait ‘til we get our Hanes on you,” advertising campaign. A milestone was reached in 2001, when they sold their one billionth Beefy-T, and a year later the Hanes T-shirt went tagless.
