Need a day off?

August is really short of holidays for most working people. (It's one of just three months - April and June are the others - that don't include any holiday for California state employees.) We need a reason to not go to work. How about you? Pick from one of these suggested holidays:

* We Want Our MTV Day: Aug. 1, the anniversary of the music-video channel's debut in 1981.

* Leave the Building Day: Aug. 16, the anniversary of the death in 1977 of Elvis Presley at age 42.

* Keep It Brief Day: Aug. 10 has been declared National Underwear Day by www.freshpair . com, an Internet retailer of underwear for men and women.

* Geek Day: Aug. 19, anniversary of the birthday in 1921 of the late Gene Roddenberry, creator of "Star Trek."

* Girls Day Out: Aug. 18, anniversary of the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment was ratified and gave women the right to vote. Only women get this day off.
