Happy Pride!
June marks Pride Month, a special time for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters to come together and celebrate inclusion, equality, & identity. Each year, across the globe, people gather to show solidarity for those who are made to feel that their sexual identity is anything but mainstream.
Pride is more than bright colors and fun activities. Its roots run deep in a trying history, filled with decades of struggles, prejudice, and the fight for acceptance. This month’s focus honors the Stonewall uprising of June 1969. A police raid of NYC’s Stonewall Inn (which has since become a national monument) inspired the gay community to stand up and fight back, leading to riots that went on for three days and sparking the modern gay rights movement. In 1978, artist Gilbert Baker was challenged by San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk (one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US) to create a symbol of pride for the gay community. Inspired, he created the Rainbow flag.
Today the Rainbow flag and Pride celebrations mark the ever push forward for equality, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity - serving as a bright reminder of hope for the future.
