Dear Layla - Painful Plus Perfection
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009Dear Layla,
I am a full figured female who has problems with bra straps digging into my skin. I tend to wear my bra’s firm / tight as to get the best support but I find that my shoulders have become discolored from my bra straps. Is there a type of bra that will minimize my ample bosom and provide firm support without digging into my skin and causing discoloration?
Ms. Perfect but Pinched
Dear Ms. Perfect,
I have no doubt that your curves are fabulous, so I can’t help but wonder why you are wearing your bra so tight that you’re wrapping yourself like a sausage? Here’s my advice, your curves should be cupped not clenched in, hugged not dug in, and smoothed but not smothered. A properly fitting bra does not bind you so tight that it leaves marks. My guess is that you are tightening the straps or the band to compensate for an ill fitting situation with size.
I recommend making sure you are wearing the right size first. For instructions on how to get the proper fit, visit Freshpair’s Fit and Size Guide for Women.
Will you do an exercise for me? Take a look at yourself in the mirror, do the cups on the bra look like they sit away from your skin when your straps are loosened? If they do you are tightening the straps to compensate for cup size. If not, it might be the style of bra that you are wearing. You need to look at bras that have a wider strap, if the strap is 1/4″ thick and you have anything larger than a C, you’re putting all the weight of those puppies on that one little 1/4″ spot on your shoulder. No wonder they’re not thanking you at the end of the day!
Thicker straps can help alleviate some of the digging as well as clear up any discoloration. If you don’t mind trying bras with a thicker strap, here are some that I suggest:
|
|
|
Awareness Soft Cup Bra 85276 by Wacoal This style from Wacoal features a nice soft cup with no underwire as well as a padded strap. |
Beautiful Benefits Minimizer with Lace Details Bra 75-070 by Vanity Fair For more substantial straps, try this style from Vanity Fair with pretty lace detail. |
![]() |
![]() |
| Smoothing Cup Bra 4500 by Fantasie Seamless and supportive, this style by Fantasie might fit the bill for you as far as support. The wider straps along with the proper size should minimize the digging in effect. |
Satin Edge Lined Underwire Bra 35089 by Olga For an elegant and understated statement, try this style from Olga. The sleek straps coupled with the soft cup lining won’t irritate the skin or dig into your shoulders. |
Here is another exercise I want you to try: can you fit two fingers in between the band and your skin comfortably? If you can fit more than two fingers between you and your band, then your band is too loose. On the other side, if you can’t fit two, you need to loosen it up.
This may also be another reason why you are tightening your straps. If the tension around your body is not strong enough or is too strong you might be throwing the engineering of your bra off balance! It is really important to get the combination right for a proper fit. For more fitting tips and tricks take a look at Freshpair’s Fit and Size Guide.
It really is about finding the right size in combination with a bra that has the right features to support your body and breast type properly. I hope these options work for you! Happy hunting, Ms. Perfect!

Layla
Get Fit Q&A – A Fresh Fitting Start for Mother’s Day
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009Dear Layla,
I’m a new mommy and excited to be celebrating my first Mother’s day next Sunday! I have my party planned out and can’t wait to see all my friends and show off my little baby. However, I’m a little apprehensive on what I’m going to wear. I love all the new spring colors but feel like I should stick to black what with all those new bumps and bulges. Any suggestions on how I can hide those unsightly bulges but still wear one of those bright spring colors?
Thanks a bunch!
New Mommy
I can imagine how nervous you are to reveal your new baby to friends and family, but please don’t worry about your body! I’m sure most of that pressure is internal because family and friends that love you should not be judging you on how quickly you lose the bump. So relax a little…and let some shapewear do the rest!
I don’t know what type of bulges we are talking about but nothing should keep you away from those spring brights! Try some of the styles below in nude so they blend in with your skin and you will be able to wear whatever you like over it.

Spring Dress:

White jeans & Colorful top:
Get some tone in your thighs and butt, while checking your gut before squeezing into classic white jeans and one of the colorful spring tops. This Get in Shape Long Leg Brief 805123 by Wacoal can help. |

Summery skirt:
Don’t let your worry about the things your disappearing baby bump is leaving behind, shape up with a style like this one from Body Wrap with sheer skirts that flutter you still won’t be able to see this second skin shapewear piece. Try the High-Waist Brief 44811 by Body Wrap. |
Again, please remember, your friends and family are going to be supportive of you with or without that extra little bulge. Enjoy the day, you deserve it!
Happy Mother’s Day!

For Men, Size Does Matter
Friday, May 1st, 2009The auto-response most are trained to give when asked “Does size really matter?” is “No, of course not.”. This is a misleading & culture deteriorating lie we should stand up against. Of course size matters!
Now, maybe you think this doesn’t apply, that you are immune and that it’s not important. Your naivety is precious, but, alas, no one is impervious, it will creep up on you eventually (literally).
So what can you do to combat this problem? Measure yourself, know how you size up and let others weigh in if needed.
Measuring
Know that the true size of your underwear is typically the same size as your jeans. When you measure your waist, be sure to wrap the tape measure around your body at the same level as where your jeans are worn, make sure the tape is flat, taunt and laying horizontally on the body.
Brand Sizing
Always check each brand’s size guide to be sure your medium is their medium. There is nothing worse than buying a fancy pair of boxer briefs to have them be a size (or more) smaller than what you expected. It’s uncomfortable, unflattering and definitely not the show you want to put on when you take off your pants. We’ve gathered together all the size charts in one place to help you compare apples to apples – See our Fit & Size Guide for underwear, then choose your brand from the dropdown.
Read Reviews
If you still can’t decide if a brand’s medium is truly a medium, then read reviews for that product and similar products from that brand. Freshpair has thousands of reviews from actual customers that include comments on sizing and fit. Who better to advise on how a specific product fits than the people wearing that product day-to-day? If there’s an issue, they’ll let you know.
With this information at hand, you can now avoid the sad situation when your new mediums fit like a small and feel like some S&M contraption meant to restrict your movement.
Plus, check out all our Fit & Size guides: underwear, t-shirts, socks, and sleepwear.
Happy Underwearing.

Behind the Brands- Why finding the perfect fit is harder than it seems
Tuesday, April 21st, 2009An exclamation I have heard time and time again is Why can I never find a bra that fits perfectly?! What is the perfect bra? It is every woman’s dream and nightmare to search for a bra that fits and flatters, and has the right style to express her personality. Even being in the industry of underwear does not give you the magic looking glass. I cannot tell anyone that they can find the “perfect” fitting bra. I think you can find a fabulous bra, that fits your needs but here are the things you need to understand about the bra industry behind those perfect peaks you are seeking so that you might have a better chance of maneuvering through the bra aisles and pages, to a brand and a bra that fit you just right.
Brand Loyalty
This goes two ways, it goes between a customer and a brand, in that if you keep buying the bra, the brand will keep making it. This means no waiting years to buy another, if you see it in a different color stock up. If you notice your bra’s fabric and elastic getting shot don’t hold out a couple more months! Here at Freshpair, we try to make finding your favorite styles easy. You can search by:
If you’re above a D finding a bra that can balance the weight of your chest becomes an uphill battle. You’ll want to stick with brands that specialize in fuller figures because they’ll inherently understand your needs better than a brand that takes a 34B bra and sizes it up to you. Here is where a brand’s loyalty to you comes in, because it is in their best interests to know who their customer’s are and to continue making great bras that fit their needs.
Here are some great brands that make sure they make bras with fuller figure women in mind!
Refit yourself often as well, because throughout the month and year your body can fluctuate in size and throw off your fit, in some cases by one full cup size! In that case different fitting bras may be appropriate. For fitting tips check our fit guide.
Fit Models
One thing you might not think about when purchasing a bra is the planning and fitting that goes into getting that bra just right. You might not know that for all of the apparel industry there are models who fit specific sizes that come into designer showrooms and actually try on and comment on the fit of the products that wind up in your closet and lingerie drawers. These fit models must maintain the size they are hired to fit in, and here’s where you can get a lot of insight into why one company’s size 34B might fit slightly differently than another’s- they have different fit models!
If one fit model is a young perky 34B while another is a fuller, older, and heavier 34B the bras will serve two completely different body types. One will be built more for function and lift because it is being fit on breasts that need them, and the other is being fit on a tighter figure so it can be less about function and more about fashion. This explains so much as to why certain brands fit what many term “real women” while others fail to meet those needs.
Another thing you might find interesting, there is no way to fit all the bra band/cup combinations, so the major bra fit sizes are the ones you find most women end up buying 32A, 34B, 36C, 38D, and it all gets a little more complicated above D when companies differ in their size labeling.
Materials
Each fabric stretches differently, and when you combine fabric with elastic the stretch needs to be “married” properly. A lot of experimentation and fittings go into getting each new fabric variation of a bra right. For instance, just because the microfiber version fits one way, does not automatically translate into cotton.
Since Calvin Klein has a really great fit team behind their brand these styles in their Perfectly Fit collection in different materials should fit great across the board. One is a microfiber T-shirt bra, another allover and unlined lace, one a lace and microfiber combination, and finally a push up.
Underneath it All
Underneath fabrics the cups and underwires are major reasons that one bra fits differently from one to another even within the same brand. The rise of the molded cup has been a great revolution because you can get a molded fabric without seams or a molded pad with a natural shape and even push built in, but at the same time you are trying to fit all the many variations of natural breasts into a very specific shape built by a molding machine. Not every woman will fit into each mold. So from one shape cup to the next the mold is going to be different which means even if you are a Calvin Klein girl, you might not find the perfect fit across the brand. That’s just an example because a brand like Calvin Klein is pretty true to size across their product range. It is really all about your personal shape and finding a bra that fits you.
Directly connected to the cups the different thicknesses and styles/shapes of underwire are also a big part of the fit. If you are a fuller figure that needs a more secure fit don’t go for underwire with a wide or half moon shape like you’ll find on plunge styles below:
![]() |
![]() |
| Underneath, Sheer Scroll Convertible Ultra Light Contour Plunge Bra 131040 by Natori | Strappies Bump Push-Up Plunge Underwire Bra 2111796 by Lily of France |
Look for underwires that are more U-shaped which hold and support. Make sure you are wearing the right size, because improper sizing is a major reason women feel digging underwires!
![]() |
![]() |
| Satin Comfort Lined Underwire Bra 35110 by Olga | Hedona Seamless Molded Underwire Bra 2031 by Chantelle |
I hope this has helped give you some insight into what goes into a product behind the scenes that might affect the fit once you get it home! Hope you have some more luck armed with a little bit more information!
Dear Layla - The Bare Truth
Friday, April 10th, 2009Dear Layla,
My girlfriend complained that my underwear has holes in it, but seriously how does she notice these things?! Anyways, you got any suggestions, if I’m making an effort I don’t want to break the bank but I guess it is time for something new. I don’t want anything too… you know wierd or anything. Got any recession specials?
Thanks,
Briefly EmBareAssed
Hi EmBareAssed,
Well I can understand how she feels, I think it makes a girl feel more like a mom than anything to have to ask her boyfriend to buy new underwear and socks, but as much as I feel for her I do understand where you are coming from. It isn’t something you would necessarily worry about for yourself, but you know you obviously care because A. She’s in the picture, and B. You’ve written in. So I’m happy to lend a helping hand. Here are a few boxers I think you should try:
![]() |
Classic Woven Solid Vineyard Boxer Short U62612958 by Tommy Hilfiger
I really like this classic style by Tommy Hilfiger, I think the printed waistband and solid colors are understated and subtle enough but still a little more “done up” than what you might be used to! |
![]() |
Woven Slim Fit Boxer U1513 by Calvin Klein
You definitely cannot go wrong with Calvin Klein! Come on, I think the classic plaid and the subtle logo are really nice and definitely an upgrade your girlfriend will appreciate. |
Above I gave you a couple of boxer options but if you’d like to go in the brief direction there are a lot of nice styles out there. This is totally to your preference because it’s really about what you will feel comfortable in. If you’ve never tried one or the other before I always suggest branching out, who can it hurt right?
I recommend trying any of these briefs:
![]() |
Steel Micro Low Rise Trunk U2716 by Calvin Klein
I think the Calvin Klein Steel collection in microfiber or cotton are both really great options for briefs. |
![]() |
Classic Button Fly Boxer Brief U62512352 by Tommy Hilfiger
I think this classic button style by Tommy Hilfiger might also fit the bill of not being weird but definitely being pulled together and updated. |
![]() |
Basics Button Front Boxer Brief 50125009 by Hugo Boss
Another classic button up, this one from Hugo Boss I think might also keep you securely in your girlfriend’s graces…just don’t let these wear too thin if you know what I mean! |
I hope this gave you a start. The selection of men’s styles really goes on and on, and if you’re anything like my boyfriend, I know some of the pics may be much. But think about it this way… you can shop from the privacy of your own home, it’s better than staring at those pics in a department store with some creepy guy hanging over your shoulder right?!
Good luck, and please keep them fresh!
xo

Panties Fit with Style
Monday, April 6th, 2009When most women hit the search for panties that fit they get overwhelmed by the number of options. Thong, bikini, hipster, boyshort, brief, full brief, hi-cut, low rise, seamless, lace, print! It’s enough to make even a lingerie aficionado’s head spin. To cut through the confusion and all the jargon, find a couple of styles that you are comfortable with. Keep a couple of special styles reserved for special occasions or specific items in your wardrobe, and maybe bookmark this page!Based on your body type you’ll probably feel more comfortable with different silhouettes or styles of underwear. Just because you see celebrities flashing their thongs doesn’t mean you have to be. Hipsters and Boyshorts are becoming more popular as the opposite but hideous side effect of thongs lack of VPL is that Peek-A-Boo thong top above jeans and slacks! Hipsters and Boyshorts hit below the waist and below the fleshy part of your rear keeping lines minimal while offering more flattering coverage.
If you’re wearing a thicker pair of jeans you don’t really need to worry too much about color so you can pick the style of your choice in fun colors that let you mix and match! You can also wear the safer colors which will appeal to many in this economy of black, white, and nude. But I think, if you have freedom to play why not do it where the random eye won’t see!
![]() |
This Calvin Klein hipster exemplifies great fit, cool detail, and fabulous fashion print for the season. You could match this with a white bra, a steely blue, pink, or even purple. So if you have any of those lying around add instant mix match life to an old style by pairing it with these! |
![]() |
What about a more subtle print option? This Hanes Perfect Mix and Match Print Bikini 42PM adds just the right touch with a little print on the hip of a bikini silhouette. |
![]() |
Another really great option is pairing a printed waistband and fabric. This Printed Cotton Stretch Boxat Boy Short by Diesel is in cotton so if you lean away from synthetics you can still have fun in a updated cotton basic. |
Underneath a slinky pair of slacks, skin skimming pants, or leggings these seamless options are your best bet for seamless coverage. You could really wear any silhouette here based on how comfortable you are with your body. I’ve picked the fuller coverage pieces but if you’re comfortable with thongs go for it! If you’re wearing white make sure to order a color that matches your skin, white panties plus sheer white actually shows up as a brighter shade of white therefore outlining your rear, not something you want to do, you want your underwear to disappear. The same goes for summer dresses, a nude style will disappear when other colors might shine through. Make sure for summer you stock up on nude undies to avoid this!
![]() |
Calvin Klein does seamless really well. This hipster is a great seamless silhouette because it usually hits below any fleshy areas so you don’t get digging in. |
![]() |
Add a little dash of femininity to this Calvin Klein Seamless Hipster with a little lace edge and you still keep it pretty seamless and invisible but definitely not as much as with the lain seamless. |
![]() |
If you want something with waist control, Shapewear panties are definitely a great option. This high waist Hide and Sleek Hi-Rise Panty 141 by Spanx will do the job. |
Super low rise jeans pose a difficult issue, what can you wear that will not peak above the top! There a two brands that I think poe the best solutions for this issue! On Gossamer and Hanky Panky both offer great low rise styles with style.
![]() |
Sexy low rise styles in lace are their signature at Hanky Panky. The size is one size fits all because this lace does not dig in it also doesn’t pose the risk of VPL especially with denim. |
![]() |
In mesh or cotton the OnGossamer Hip G offers a low rise option for those low rise pant silhouettes. |
![]() |
On Gossamer also has a really great stretch lace style. |
I also want to mention that fashion panties are so often overlooked in our search for the basics, but some of these styles are so flattering you won’t want to miss out on them for special occasions.
![]() |
I really love the mix of fabric and lace and the little details in this Sheer Ribbon Thong E16-328, details that the Elle Macpherson Intimates brand is known for. |
![]() |
How fabulous is the rear view on this panty! The ruching flatters a flat or full figure and really accentuates a woman’s unique curves. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for seamless but if you want something sexy but still covered this is a great look by Natori. |
![]() |
Another sweet Natori look is this lace trimmed thong, and again with stretch lace you don’t really get panty lines since it doesn’t dig in the way that elastics do in many cases. |
I hope you feel like you can tackle the panty world with a little bit more style knowledge. There are definitely many more variables to keep in mind but when it comes to your underwear always keep fit first, because if it doesn’t fit right it will just show through and not in a desirable way!
Get Fit Q&A - Sensitive to Synthetic Fabrics
Monday, March 2nd, 2009Dear Layla,
I’m a new mom and during my pregnancy I started to become very sensitive to synthetics, is that common? Well, since I gave birth I am still wary about wearing synthetic fabrics. I’m at home with the kids so I need something I can move in, but I still want to look good doing it!
Miss-matched Mom
Dear Miss-matched,
I’m no doctor, so I have no explanation as to why some people become allergic to things, and for that matter why it might be triggered by pregnancy. I can understand that a pregnant body goes through a lot of changes, and that the growth would also make previously sensitive skin even more so.
There is this buzz word going around that you might have heard of, it’s called organic. Well please don’t be fooled, we’re still working on what it means to be organic in the clothing industry. Maybe the fiber (i.e. cotton) is harvested without chemicals and bleach, it’s spun and woven or knitted, but then to get fun bright sellable colors, printed or dyed. Well most dyes and prints are not organic. Just because something is synthetic also does not mean it doesn’t have a base in organic matter either. For instance, modal is processed beechwood, but it took chemicals to process wood pulp into fiber then fabric.
What I’m trying to get at is, don’t assume you’re allergic to all synthetics because of an allergic reaction. I would recommend being cautious with your buying, of course. Just because you are buying an organic based fiber does not mean the final product is “green” or completely “organic”.
I would suggest cotton is a good place to start. I would stick with a fine grade pima cotton, but steer clear of mercerized cotton since it can involve a chemical process that might cause a reaction. On the plus side, the brands making pima cotton products happen to be doing something right on the style end!
Check out some of ADAM’s great lounge T’s and tanks. They really have a effortless look that I would suggest buying in black to avoid those thrills and spills I’m sure will happen around the house.
A couple of pieces I like are:
![]() |
the ADAM Three Quarter Sleeve Henley Shirt (EBJS27) great for layering or wearing alone, |
![]() |
the ADAM Cap Sleeve Vee Shirt (EBJB14) for a simple, comfortable look, |
![]() |
and the ADAM Traveling Gym Pant (E05S635) perfect for lounging, sleeping, or running those daily errands. |
I think in the undergarment arena, On Gossamer offers clean sophisticated pieces with a great fit. Their signature elastic is virtually seamless under clothing.
A couple of standouts:
![]() |
the onGossamar Cotton Reversible Camisole (1427) perfect for layering under tops or sweaters |
![]() |
and the onGossamar Cotton Hip Bikini (1402), a low-rise bikini that stays in place |
And as a final word, I wouldn’t swear off all synthetics. I would take it on a trial basis. By swearing off synthetics you’re missing out on mesh, microfiber, and seamless technology. Unless you’ve seriously developed a lifelong allergy, I think you will find there are synthetic products that you can handle. It really depends on the fiber, the treatment of it with chemicals afterwards.
You might even try checking your brand of detergent! If you buy organic or natural clothing and wash it in harsh chemical detergent you might be having a reaction to that. After all you associate it with the garments next to your skin, but the chemicals from a detergent could be the culprit! We carry Soak Scentless which is affordable enough to give a try. It’s low suds, and so easy to use! I love this stuff!
Xoxo,
Layla
What’s Her Style? Valentine’s Day Shopping Cues based on Personality
Monday, February 9th, 2009This one is for the straight males floating through freshpair.com. I know you’re there! Just a friendly reminder that Valentine’s Day is coming up, and if you’re here you probably already thought of that, and maybe you stopped by looking for some naughty outfit that your girlfriend will look at and then look at you with the “what were you thinking?” look, you know that one.
Well somehow you made your way here and whether you realize it or not, that is the best thing that happened to you today. Today I’m going to try to give you an insight into how your girlfriend’s personality can help you pick the right set for V-day, and not your visceral reaction to how it looks on the girl in the picture!
Think about it, girls want to feel understood, and fashion being the language many speak, it’s the perfect way to show her you get it! Even a girl who is anti-fashion still expresses herself through clothing, we all do. For instance as a guy you think its appropriate to pop your collar or you don’t, it is a very clear line and that’s based on your personality!
Here’s a couple of the “types” your girlfriend might fit into, you’re on your own after this because if you are scratching your head and thinking which is she…well I can’t help you there!
The Young at Heart
If you’re not dating this girl now, you definitely have dated her or met her. She doesn’t want to grow up; she’s into video games or books that take her back. It’s a girl that rocks and parties and no matter what her age has that wild carefree nature about her. Don’t try to tie her down with sophisticated fashion, she’s beyond that. Try PJ Salvage or Paul Frank for that sweet young at heart look.
Here are some of my suggestions:
The Green Queen
Your girlfriend might have been born in the 60’s, she screams flower child and she’s definitely your new age hippie. She loves colors most people don’t wear like olive, purple, and orange in combo. For this free spirit pick things that are out of the box, because she wouldn’t be caught dead in something that fits in with the crowd. Go for fun prints, colors, and maybe a lace and micro combo in colors that look unique. A good brand to look at for her: Free People
Some suggestions for your Green Queen:

![]() |
| Free People Luxe Boho Leopard Chemise F888N990 | Free People Animal Print TankF907F953 | Free People Striped French Terry Lace Up Short F893L931 |
The Hipster
You know what hipster means right? You don’t? How do you not know? Come on, hipsters are not hippies, they are “hip”, conscious of fashion and they definitely create their own style with unique mix and match pieces that are nowhere near as earthy or out there as a true hippie, but that definitely not at that worldly feel. Look for pieces that mimic her daily style. If she’s hip try something like yoga or harem pants for around the house paired with a cute cami. ADAM carries a lot of styles that would work great for hipsters out there.
Try any of these for your Hipster gal:

| ADAM Traveling-Gym Pant E05S635 | ADAM Runners Short EFBPC18 | ADAM Three Quarter Sleeve Henley Shirt EBJS27 |
The Sophisticate
Who knows what colors she wears, maybe she goes with black or pale pink and pearls, but whatever it is she has a signature color (that you can bet is different than all her friends!) She hangs with a crowd that lives and dies by fashion, and they never want to look like they tried, but you can tell she has a style all her own. They tend to lean more towards minimalist in the accessories end it’s a clean pulled together look this girl goes for.
